Moving and Handling Training

This course provided by an external agency has been designed to introduce those working in the care industry to the basic skills necessary to ensure their own safety and that of others when assisting people to move at work.  A variety of teaching methods will be used including groupwork, discussion, demonstration and practise of handling activities.  

The Training course will discuss: 

  • Current legislation and organisational policy
  • Manual handling risk assessment requirements
  • Causes of injury whilst using incorrect Moving and Handling Techniques
  • Principles for safer handling

The Training Course will include practical demonstrations and practice relevant to participants such as:

Mobility assistance

  • assisting an individual to move to and from a bed and chair
  • assisting an individual to walk
  • preventing and dealing with falls

 Bed mobility

  • rolling and turning
  • applications of slide sheets to assist with repositioning,
  • assisting an individual in and out of bed
  • assisting an individual to sit from lying
  • sitting postures for feeding/personal care

 Safe use of equipment

  • legal requirements
  • wheelchairs
  • hoists and slings

By the end of the session the participant will:

  1. Show an understanding of current legislation and the organisation’s assisting and moving policy
  2. Show an understanding of the purpose and use of manual handling risk assessments and individuals’ handling plans
  3. Describe the causes of injury
  4. List the key principles for safe manual handling
  5. Apply safe manual handling principles to a range of assisting and moving activities relevant to their worksetting
  6. Demonstrate the safe use of equipment safely
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for high quality care that respects individuals’ dignity during all assisting and moving activities
